NICOLAY, Nicolas de, seigneur d'Arfeville (1517-1583) - Le Navigationi et Viaggi nella Turchia. Venice: Francesco Ziletti, 1580. The engravings are among the finest and most influential pictorial early representations of Turkish characters and costumes. Nicolay accompanied Gabriel d'Aramont, French diplomat and ambassador, on a mission to Constantinople in 1551. While there he wrote this account and sketched his remarkable figures of Ottomans, Arabs, Armenians, and islanders in costume. Folio (290 x 200mm).
