Salvador Dalì ( Figueres 1904 - 1989 )

DALI, Salvador (1904-1989) - Biblia Sacra vulgatae editionis. Milan: Rizzoli, 1967.   One of the 99 copies "ad personam" comprising 5 volumes in folio illustrated by 105 lithographic plates and the original gouache contained only in this rare and prestigious "tirage-de-téte". In this case the original work represents the reproduction of the lithograph "Animam et corpus trado pro patriis legibus" illustrated at p. 328 of vol. II with the passages of the Bible printed on the protective paper that precedes it "Contigit autem et septem fratres una cum sua apprehensos compelli a rege edere contra fas carnes porcinas" - "Ego autem sicut et fratres mei, animam et corpus meum trado pro patriis legibus, invocans Deum maturius genti nostrae propitium fieri" (II, Machabaeorum, 7).   The work is also exceptionally accompanied by the original bookcase designed by Studio Arch. L.M. Brunelli and made by the Bottega Artigina of Pierluigi Ghianca in Bovisio. The gouache, the cabinet, the gold cast of the hand and an additional set of 24 lithographic plates contained in 4 original portfolios, make it the most authentic and complete example of the celebrated Dalì Bible to appear on the market. 5 volumes, (475 x 352 mm). Original gouache on paper signed on verso "Dalì", mixed technique of pencil, tempera and watercolour (473 x 351 mm) preserved in a original green morocco portfolio internally covered in green silk, gilt cast of the hand of the artist, 4 editorial portfolios with brown leather spines, white silk plates with dry decoration and brown silk laces each containing "6 plates of the Sacred Biblia". The 5 volumes are complete with the 105 color lithographs printed on hand-made paper with printed protective tissues and are in excellent condition.   Editorial bindings in precious green morocco decorated in gold, red and green on spines, inlays with floral designs in gold, upper edge gilt and others uncut, all within elaborate cases (spines slightly faded as usual, some ilght scratches, cases with minimal defects at the extremities).   Book cabinet (1195 x 819 x 500 mm). Wood, adjustable shelf, storage compartments equipped with rollers for extracting volumes, secret box (with key), round metal frieze with allegory of the arts at the base (light wear). Provenance: Veritable Papier d'Arches' (embossed stamp on the verso of the gouache) - Dogana di Milano (stamp).
