MACCIO, Paolo (c. 1570-1640) - Emblemata. Bologna: Clemente Ferroni, 1628.   First and only edition of this refined book of emblems with engravings by the artists of the Carracci school: Giovanni Battista Coriolano, Oliviero Gatti and Agostino Parisini. Each emblem is accompanied by an exemplary passage from classical works with the opposite translation. The third emblem is especially curious depicting a man using a telescope; the 37th shows a crocodile hanging from the ceiling of a church.   4to (195 x 145mm). 4to (195 x 145mm). Frontispiece engraved in copper within a frame and signed by Corio, 82 engravings in the text of which 81 are of emblems and one of dedication to the Madonna (erased stamps at title's margins and oval stain on final leaf, some occasional staining and few leaves expertly restored at outer margin). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title faded on the spine (minimal defects, few wormholes). Provenance: Damiani. Augustini (? ownership inscription dated 1680 on the verso of title).
