PIRANESI, Giambattista (1720-1778) - Francesco PIRANESI (1758-1810). - I Trofei. [Rome: 1780 - con le filigrane Robinson 64 e 59 datate fra il 1770 e 1790].   A good copy on strong paper of the second enlarged edition, with Robinson 64 and 59 (Bracciano) watermarks clearly visible on many plates; after his father's death, Francesco Piranesi republished the series in 1780 and added five more plates. In this work, Piranesi deals with the so-called "Trophies of Mario", the collection of sculptures that were brought from the Acqua Giulia to the Campidoglio under Sixtus V in 1590 (see Il Campidoglio in Vedute di Roma). Although Piranesi specifies that they are the trophies of Augustus, recent studies suggests that they are parts of a monument dedicated to Domitian.   Folio (540 x 377mm). 15 fine engraved plates, 9 of which on a double page, plate 4 dated 1778 (plates 5 and 6 almost detached, plate 13 slightly browned, some light staining and foxing, occasional soiling). Modern boards, gilt titles on spine label, red marbled edges (minor wear).

Estimate € 1,800 - 2,500
