Rome: Lorenzo Filippo de' Rossi, 1729.   Second edition of the collection of beautiful engravings by Pietro Santi Bartoli printed on thick paper, portraying the ancient oil lamps found in Roman underground tombs. Santi Bartoli was a renowned artist and great scholar: "Halfway between the 16th-century "Speculum" by A. Lafréry and the 18th-century "Antiquities" by G. B. Piranesi, B. takes on his behalf [..] the theme of "magnificence of Rome" and dissects it with a tenacity and constancy that last a lifetime, extending it to paintings, sepulchral lamps, coins, ancient gems" (A. Petrucci). The first pages of the work contain the commentary of the art historian Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613-1696), who examines each illustrated lamp.   Folio (330 x 220mm). Half-title, 119 engraved plates including 3 engraved titles (lacking leaves π3-4 with the dedication, restorations on half-title and title's verso, small marginal restorations to first leaves, browning, sometimes heavy, and foxing). Later binding backed in calf, gilt decorations and title on spine label (rubbing and chipping, small wormholes on spine).
