BUZZATI, Dino (1906-1972) - Copiosa raccolta di 88 scritti inviati da Buzzati a Carla Marchi fra il 1946 e il 1971.   An intimate correspondence of letters sent by Buzzati to his beloved, friend and companion Carla Marchi between 1946 and 1971. Having met her in Messina during the years of the Second World War, he fell madly in love and remained fond of her for most of his life; after the liberation he convinced her to move to Milan and together they had a tormented relationship which it is said broke down in the 1950s (see a long letter dated 1959, letter 70), even if the two continued to see each other and to date for a long time.   It emerges how much Carla Marchi played a fundamental role in the artist's life for many of his years as a mature man. The correspondence is more intense during the first years and the letters are divided as follows: 1946 (2), 1947 (9), 1948 (9), 1949 (7), 1950 (1), 1951 (5), 1952 (6) , 1953 (4), 1954 (4), 1955 (7), 1956 (4), 1957 (2), 1958 (4), 1959 (3); the others belong to the following years, some are not dated, and the last is from 1971. The longest is a typed and signed letter in which the author tries to justify and ask forgiveness for his betrayal: "I am writing this letter with my heart in my hand".. "that girl who didn't give me a millionth of what you gave me".. "these months, I swear, have been hell for me".. "Then there is the matter of physical love.." (letter 70, 09.8.59).   The collection offers a cross-section of Buzzati's 25-years during which he remained separated from his beloved who, for health reasons and especially in the summer months, escaped the Milanese heat, and went out of town. Buzzati often says he is very worried about the women's health (that she has to take care of eating well to gain weight, not smoking and being careful in everything); he writes from various places in Milan such as his mother's house in Viale Majno, their residence in Via Washington and the headquarters of the Corriere della Sera. More often than not he defines himself as a "grumbler", he gets angry for not having received news for some time; on other occasions he says he is saddened not to be able to receive any in the following days and explains that he will be on a business trip on behalf of the Corriere as for example when he will have to be absent to go and write "about warships" (letter 4). "Imagine if they sent me to be a special envoy and I had to stay away for months and months. What would you do?" (letter 30).   Fascinating and full of tenderness are the many drawings that accompany the letters; these are typical illustrations by Buzzati such as mice, birds and above all the dogs Napoleone, Tobi and others that he met in his daily life (letter 67 with a drawing of a sad dog that had been run over). Among the smaller drawings are some he uses to describe the dreams he often talks about: "I dreamed that while playing with Napoleon I made him do a somersault backwards and he fell on his back" (letter 65).
