BRANCALEONE, Giovanni Francesco (ca. 1500) - De Balneis. Nuremberg: Johann Petreius [al colphon], 1536.   A 16th century edition difficult to find on the market, of this influential balneological treatise by one of the founders of hydrotherapy. It is a modern interpretation of Galen, Avicenna and Hippocrates, illustrating and promoting the healthful and hygienic effects of the bath a generation before Fallopian, and long before the 19th century European trend for spa treatments.   8vo (157 x 105mm). Woodcut initials (some staining, paper flaw touching text without compromising its legibility in A8, some restorations mostly aimed at covering wormtracks sometimes touching text). Antique vellum, title on later spine label (modern endpapers, staining and wear, lightly bowed). Provenance: numerous contemporary annotations and maniculae.
