GALENO (129-201) - Omnia quae extant opera. Quorum alia nunc primum sunt inventa [..]. Venice: eredi Giunti, 1550.   Second edition in large format of Galen in the Giuntina version published for the first time in 1541, preserved in elegant bindings with 16th-century covers in red morocco. For this version the Giunti, instead of making a synthesis of the previous Latin editions as the editors used to do, based the text on the original Greek manuscripts and made an edition according to the humanistic canons: they therefore clearly distinguished the text of Galen from the passages attributed to him and by the comments, written by specialized doctors and anatomists including Andrea Vesalio (1514-1564) and Agostino Gadaldino (1515-1575). The titles are all richly printed in woodcut and depict various events in the life of Galen. This copy is also annotated and underlined by several ancient hands, some of which contemporary.   11 tomes in 6 volumes, folio (357 x 245mm). Coat of arms of the dedicatee Cardinal Giovanni Salviati in colour on the first title, printer's devices on the other titles and colophons, titles within elaborate woodcut borders, woodcut initials, numerous woodcut illustrations in volume VIII (without final leaf probably blank in the first and fifth volume and final blank in the third volume, tear on the first title without loss of text, small wormholes and wormtracks touching some letters, more invasive in the final gatherings of the index volume, occasional browning, foxing, soiling and light marginal waterstains, some marginal tear). Contemporary Venetian red morocco restored with new spines in the 18th century, gilt decorations with pine cones and daisies at the corners, Fortuna with a sail on a dolphin and under a pine cone in the centre, all within blindstamped frames, richly gilt decorations and titles on spines, vellum bookmarks (light rubbing, 16th century covers with heavier rubbing, wormholes). Provenance: contemporary and ancient annotations and underlinings. (6)
