Rome: Domenico Basa, 1592.   First edition in Italian of this important work on gastronomy, nutrition and healthy living by the Archiater of Gregory XIII, which originally appeared in Latin in 1581 and was translated by Basilio Paravicino. In his treatise, Petronius deals with numerous issues of dietetics, providing precise indications on the quality of foods and precepts useful for "prolongar la vita, & differir la vecchiezza".   4to (236 x 168mm). Title with engraved vignette with the arms of the dedicatee Cardinal Feliciano Niguarda of Como, woodcut initials, head-and-tail pieces (rare tiny marginal wormtracks, 3E1 with paper flaw partially touching text, some marginal tiny tears, waterstaining, foxing and browning sometimes heavier). Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript title on spine (some staining and tiny losses especially on spine).
