Aia: Jacobus van Karnebeek, [1781]-1803.   First French edition of the famous Physignomische Fragmente, corrected by the author and augmented by an introduction in French. The work is complete of the fourth volume planned for 1788, but released only after the French Revolution in 1803.   4 volumes, 4to (342 x 287mm). Half-title in vol. IV, engraved vignette on titles, with errata at end of vol. I and instructions to the binder at the end of each volume, 193 engraved plates of which the penultimate double-page and numerous printed on recto and verso [respectively 14, 78, 53, 48] by Chowiecki, Berger, Schellenberger, Lips, Eckardt, Fresinger, and almost 500 engraved illustrations including numerous black silhouettes (some foxing and light browning, occasional stains). Contemporary half vellum, gilt titles on spine labels (extremities rubbed, some wear to joints and spines). (4)
