[ORNITOLOGIA] - - A lot dedicated to the work of Martorelli, Professor of natural sciences at the C. Beccaria high school in Milan and director of the Turati ornithological collection at the city museum. He illustrated almost all of his writings with numerous watercolours and reproduced in his publications photos that he himself took. "Gli uccelli d'Italia", with two subsequent editions (ibid. 1931 and 1960), represents the most widely circulated Italian ornithological book in the first 80 years of the 20th century.   MARTORELLI, Giacinto (1855-1917) - Osservazioni sui mammiferi ed uccelli fatte in Sardegna. Pistoia: Cino dei f.lli Bracali, 1884. - [BOUND WITH, by the same author:] - Le forme e le simmetrie delle macchie nel piumaggio. Milan: Bernardoni di C. Rebeschini e C., 1898. Folio (317 x 233mm). Illustrations and 5 lithographic plates, 2 of which in colour (some foxing and browning). Contemporary half calf, gilt titles and decorations on spine, decorated endpapers, original wrappers preserved (light wear, minimal losses at extremities). Provenance: Paul Leverkuhn (1867-1905), German physicist and ornithologist (ownership inscription on wrappers and stamps at the end) - at the recto of the errata at the end of the first volume is a neat manuscript list   Gli uccelli d'Italia. Milano: Cogliati, 1906. Folio (288 x 204mm). Printer's device on title, 236 photogravures from watercolours, original photographs by the author and 6 colour lithographic plates (p. 251 and 676 with tear to upper margin, some slight foxing). Quarter calf, gilt titles and decorations on spine, marbled endpapers. (2)
