[ROMA] - NIBBY, Antonio (1792-1839) - Analisi storico-topografico-antiquaria della carta de' dintorni di Roma. Rome: Tipografia delle Belle Arti, 1837.   First edition of the famous erudite work by Antonio Nibby, topographer, member of the Roman Academy of Archeology and professor of Archeology at Sapienza University. It illustrates the most famous and fascinating places in the Roman countryside as a commentary on the enclosed "Carta de' dintorni di Roma secondo le osservazioni di sir William Gell" published in 1827, the result of five years of topographical surveys.   3 volumes and one folding map, 4to. (220 x 145mm the volumes; 770 x 850mm the map). Half-titles, one engraved folding plate in the first volume; a large map of the Roman countryside mounted on canvas (spotting, waterstain on the titles of the second and third volumes, map with small restoration and some browning and foxing). It was not possible to find a collation of the volumes, but the text seems complete and is collated as follows: first volume 1-3/8 4/4 (preliminaries); π2 1-34/8 35/4 36/6; second volume 1-42/8 43/4 (-43/4); third volume 1-47/8 48/8. Contemporary bindings with red leather spine, gilt decorations and title on spine (very light wear); map in a matching modern slipcase, leather spine with gilt decorations and title. Provenance: halos on the half-titles and titles, perhaps from removed bookstamps. (4)
