TOLOMEO, Claudio (100-170) - Geographiae universae tum veteris tum novae absolutissimum opus duobus voluminibus. Venice: eredi di Simon Gallignani de Karera, 1596.   An excellent copy of this sought-after edition of Ptolemy with the Latin translation by Magini and with the plates in excellent impression and condition. The maps of this new edition, engraved by Porro, were reprinted in Magini's editions of 1597, 1608 and 1617, and in Italian translations in 1598 and 1621; the plates in the latter printings often showed considerable wear or retouching.   2 parts in one volume, 4to (221 x 160mm). Allegorical engraved vignettes on title, numerous diagrams, second part complete of 64 engraved maps including the double-page planisphere "Orbis terrae compendiosa descriptio" inserted between E1 and E2, woodcut initials and headpieces, first part with final blank, errata at end (the preliminary leaves of the first part with only 3 leaves in gathering "cross" instead of the 6 called for in SBN as the preface by Magini is lacking, some foxing, a tiny wormhole in the bottom corner of first title, occasional browning, a few leaves slightly cropped at upper margin). Later leather with blindstamped decorations on spine, label with title on spine and speckled edges (rather worn). Provenance: G. XXVII (letters engraved in gilt on front cover) - some early annotations (cropped).

Estimate € 4,000 - 7,000
