Paris: Volland, Desenne, 1789-90.   A fascinating account of the journey that the philosopher and orientalist Volney undertook in Egypt and Syria starting from 1782; the first edition was published in 1787. The work is complete with 5 folding engraved plates: 2 are maps of Egypt and Syria, while the others depict the ruins of Balbek and Palmyra. His most famous work printed in 1791, "Ruines ou Méditations sur les révolutions des empires" derives precisely from his thoughts on the latter archeological site.   2 volumes, 8vo (195 x 125mm). Woodcut headpieces, 5 engraved folding plates including 2 maps (without half-title in first volume, without final leaf probably blank in second volume, browning, tear in the inner margin of a8 slightly touching text, waterstain at X2 in first volume and Y3-4 in second).
