GUARINI, Battista (1538-1612) - Il pastor fido. Venice: Francesco de' Franceschi, 1597.   A copy in contemporary vellum of the renown pastoral which opens the numerous series of this theatrical genre which had its greatest development and best fortune in the 17th century. It had many reprints: over forty editions were published before Guarini's death; it was adapted in every way, translated into many Italian dialects, especially in the Neapolitan and Bergamo dialects, and in the main foreign languages.   12mo (130 x 71mm). Title within a woodcut border, woodcut initials, head-and-tail pieces, engraved vignettes at the beginning of each act (slight waterstaining throughout, A8 and A12 with tiny restoration to lower margin, some foxing). Contemporary vellum, gilt decorations on spine and plates, speckled edges (some stains on front cover).
