Milan: Beniamino Sirtori, 1757.   First edition of this erudite treatise which examines ancient Milanese monuments, focusing above all on the symbolic interpretations of sculptures and friezes. The author, a Milanese theologian and archaeologist, enjoyed great fame and was appointed librarian of the Braidense by Maria Theresa of Austria in 1752.   4to (245 x 200mm). Woodcut initials, some woodcut illustrations, 8 engraved folding plates (without final blank, very light browning, light spotting and soiling especially on the first pages, tiny stains at margins of A4, tear at the corner of K3 not touching text and at margin of plate III). Modern half vellum over marbled paper, gilt decorations and title on spine label, marbled endpapers (very light rubbing). Provenance: erased and restored stamp on title.
