PALOMINO DE CASTRO Y VELASCO, Antonio (1655-1726) - El museo pictorico, y escala optica.. theorica de la pintura-practica de la pintura. Madrid: Lucas Antonio de Bedmar, 1715-24.   First edition of the “Spanish Vasari”. This is the most renown work by Antonio Paolomino de Castro y Valesco accompanied by interesting engraved plates and remembered for the third part which includes very valuable information on the Spanish artists. The work collects the main sources used for the study of the history of Spanish Baroque painting and contains as many as 226 biographies of artists in chronological order; despite its title of “Parnasso español”, there are also biographies dedicated to foreign painters who worked in Spain. The author is also known for having been the first to write the biography of Diego Velazquez.   3 parts in 2 volumes, folio (302 x 205mm). Titles within woodcut borders, headpieces and initials, 17 engraved plates of perspectives, landscapes, portraits, geometric and architectural forms, the third volume entitled "El Parnaso espagnol pintoresco laureado" begins at p.231 (lacking the engraved frontispieces, some plates slightly trimmed and with some wear to margins, some stains, browning, soiling, title of the first volume a little worn at inner margin, some initial pages with paper flaw causing a tear, some other occasional tears, bigger tear at S2 in the second volume). Contemporary mottled calf, titles on spine labels and gilt decorations on spine, marbled endpapers, red edges (later endpapers, some rubbing). (2)
