Venice: Lazarus Soardus, 1511.   A good illustrated copy of Plauto's comedies curated by Bernardo Saraceno and Pietro Valla with numerous early annotations. From the same year and the same printer is another version of the Comedies with a different illustrated title.   Folio (293 x 205mm). Elaborate woodcut title, large full-page plate, more than 300 splendid illustrations, woodcut initials, printer's device at end (without final blank, title page browned and reinforced in the margins, first gathering a little damaged with some leaves detached or about to, occasional browning). 18th-century half-vellum over decorated boards, gilt title on spine, blue speckled edges (modern endpapers, spine worn and with wormholes, some rubbing, textblock pulling from binding and causing some damaged). Provenance: early ownership inscriptions formerly erased on title, initial leaves and at end - other elegant contemporary annotations - illegible stamp on the upper inner margin of title.
