POLIBIO (206 a.C.-118 a.C) - Historiarum libri quinque, opera Vincentij Obsopoei in lucem editi [..]. HAGAGANAU: Iohannem Secerium, 1530.   Editio princeps in elegant morocco of the first five books of Polybius in Greek: the printing work was started by Vincentius Opsopoeus (d. 1539), to then be completed by Johannes Secerium. The name of Opsopoeus which appears on title was in fact canceled in ancient times in this copy which, unfortunately, lacks the Latin translation by Nicolò Perotto (1430-1480 ) following the Greek text. The complete text of Polybius in Greek will then be printed only in 1609.   Folio (285 x 200mm). Woodcut initials, text in Greek characters (without the second part in Latin identified by SBN with the gatherings ²A-Z⁶2A⁴, missing A3-4 not present even in the digitized copy, leaves Q5 and 6 glued together, browning, occasional stains and soiling). Burgundy 19th-century morocco, large gilt border with floral elements and thinner blindstamped border on covers, gilt decorations and title on spine, richly gilt decorated dentelles, marbled endpapers (light rubbing, especially on spine ends and joints). Provenance: ex Bibliotheca Johannis Schulsingii; Guglielmus Coetier anno 1667 (ancient ownership inscriptions on title) - ancient ownership inscription in Greek and Latin at title's verso - Walter Ashburner Firenze (private bookplate on title; 1864-1936 bibliophile).
