ARIOSTO, Lodovico (1474-1533) - Orazio TOSCANELLA (1510-1580) - Bellezze del Furioso. Venice: Pietro dei Franceschi, 1574.   First edition of this commentary by Toscanella, which examines the most crucial points of the poem proceeding song by song, focusing in particular on allegories and artifices. The author identifies Ariosto's ability to "vary greatly" as a notable trait of his poetic style and then focuses on analyzing the different techniques used. The commentary is accompanied by numerous woodcut vignettes that illustrate some episodes of the poem. The same publication also includes "I luochi communi di tutta l'opera del Furioso", a very important text for Arioste's linguistic analysis.   4to (205 x 146mm). Printer's device on title, text within woodcut border, woodcut initials and illustrations (light browning, occasional light foxing). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (without laces, light rubbing). Provenance: Antonia Suardi Ponti (1860-1938, founder of the homonym library in Bergamo, bookplate on endpaper).
