Smit, Jean Hofhout, 1734.   First folio edition limited to 150 copies, in elegant binding, of Fénelon's work. The text, printed within a refined woodcut border in 395 pages, is accompanied by splendid illustrations; it is the most important edition before the suites by Cochin and Monnet. Furthermore, our copy constitutes the first issue, characterized by a frontispiece by Picart engraved by Folkema, a portrait of Fénelon by Vivien engraved by Drevet and 24 plates by Debrie, Dubourg et Picart, engraved by Bernaerts, Folkema, Gunst et Surugue, 24 headpieces and 21 culs-de-lampe engraved by Duflos, Schenk, Folkema et Tanjé.   Folio (360 x 253mm). Half-title, engraved frontispiece, title in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut initials and borders, elaborate engraved head-and-tail pieces, portrait of the author and 24 engraved plates (some detached gatherings, foxing and light browning). Contemporary calf, title on label and rich gilt decorations on spine and plates, speckled edges, marbled endpapers (defects and restorations to joints, somewhat worn). It was not possible to find a collation, our copy has one more gathering than the BNF digital copy and is collated as follows: *4, a-c4, d2(-d2), A-3C4, 3D2.
