ONGARO, Antonio (ca. 1569-1599) - L'Alceo favola pescatoria. Ferrara: Vittorio Baldini, 1614.   Copy once owned by the great Viennese collector Franz Pollack-Parnau (1903-1981) of Ongaro's piscatorial drama. The work, dedicated in this edition to Cardinal Serra, was highly successful and marked a departure from the humanistic piscatorial eclogue. "Ongaro more decisively bends the legacy of literary experience preceding him to become an interpreter of his own existential universe, subtly presenting autobiographical elements between the lines. In an unexpected manner within that literary genre, he opens sudden introspective glimpses with keen depth of reflection and psychological delineation" (Manzoli, DBI).   4to (186 x 133mm). Title within an elaborate woodcut border with coat of arms of the dedicatee, woodcut initial and head-and-tail pieces (title slightly cropped, some foxing). Later vellum, gilt title on spine label, yellow lower edge (some wormholes on spine, light wear). Provenance: Franz Pollack Parnau (bookplate at front endpaper).
