GEMELLI CARERI, Giovanni Francesco ( 1648-1724) - A Voyage round the World. [London: John Waltoe, 1732].   A fascinating illustrated account of Giovanni Francesco Careri's travels around the world published for the first time in 1699 and taken here from the series "A Collection of Voyages and Travels". The author embarked in 1693 on a ship bound for the Levant. He visited Turkey and Constantinople, Armenia, Persia, entering India and China; from there he passed to Japan and the Philippines and then crossed the Pacific to America. He saw California, Peru, Mexico and Cuba; finally sailing on the Atlantic, he reached Spain and France to return to Italy. The volume traces the author's travels and is divided into 6 chapters: Turkey, Persia, India, China, Philippines-Islands, New Spain.   Folio (356 x 216mm). 10 engraved plates, two of which printed on recto and verso of the same leaf, 4 engraved illustrations (minimal loss to lower corner of the leaves of the first half of the text, light waterstain in the lower corner). Contemporary calf, blindstamped decorations on covers, title on spine (rebacked, light rubbing). The text of the voyage is taken from volume IV of Awnsham Churchill's "A Collection of Voyages and Travels" (second edition, 1732) and it includes pp. 1-572 of that volume, omitting some following short stories by other authors and the title, including the author's preface, but probably excluding a leaf following it. The work is sold as described and not subject to return.
