BODE, Johann Elert (1747-1826) - Anleitung zur Kenntniß des gestirnten Himmels. Berlin: Christan Friedrich Himburg, 1788.   A fundamental astronomical work published for the first time in 1772 and containing the first formulation of Bode's Law, aimed at describing the semi-major axes of the orbits of the planets. Bode's contribution was also essential in the definition of the orbit of Uranus, discovered only in 1781 and depicted in a plate of this edition.   8vo (197 x 125mm). Woodcut headpieces, 15 engraved folding plates at the end (without the portrait of the author reported in copies previously sold at auction, thin tear to first plate along the fold, marginal restoration to second plate, occasional spotting and light browning). Contemporary marbled boards, red edges (light rubbing at extremities and joints). It was not possible to find a collation, our copy is as follows: *8 (-*8), A-2S8, 2T2, 2*2.
