[CACCIA] - CIRINO, Andrea (1618-1664) - De venatione, et natura animalium libri quinque. Palermo: Giuseppe Bisagni, 1653.   First edition of this extensive dissertation on hunting dogs and wild animals, including monstrous ones. It is part of a larger work which was supposed to be released in five books but remained unfinished. The present copy also contains the initial index leaves, which are almost always absent, and relate to the comprehensive project of the work. The study is based on a broad and solid knowledge and is supported by an extensive repertoire of sources and quotations from ancient authors, documents, and archaeological findings. Of particular interest is the extensive section of images, including depictions of hunting on ancient coins, mythical animals, various types of game, and even fish.   4to (183 x 138mm). Half-title, title with printer's device, initials, headpieces, and numerous woodcut illustrations (paperflaw partially restored on half-title, title partially detached at upper margin, first pages shorter at outer margin and maybe from another copy, some pages slightly cropped, gathering P repeated, some waterstaining and foxing). Later vellum, gilt title on spine label, speckled edges (stains, small wormhole, and some wear). Compared to SBN' Variant A this copy also contains the indexes signed §4 (-§4). Provenance: early ownership inscription on title's verso.
