Leclerc], 1784.   First edition of the illustrated erotic work by D'Hancarville, an art historian actively engaged in Naples in the study of the precious collection of antiquities of ambassador William Hamilton (1730-1803). The curious plates are all erotic themed, of the "spintrien" genre, and were engraved by Denon following the author's subjects, who pretended them to be based on authentic cameos, carnelians and other ancient stones.   4to (257 x 193mm). Engraved frontispiece, woodcut vignette on title, woodcut devices, 50 engraved plates (browning, occasional spotting). Contemporary marbled calf, triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt rich decorations and title on spine, gilt edges, gilt dentelles, blue endpapers (light rubbing).
