PIROLI, Tommaso (1752-1824) - Antiquités d'Herculanum. Paris: Piranesi, Leblanc, 1804-06.   First edition of the collection of engravings by the famous Roman artist Tommaso Piroli, a friend of Giovanni Battista Piranesi; with his sons he published this work in Paris. The engravings are divided as follows: the first three volumes depict Paintings, the fourth and fifth Bronzes, the sixth Lamps and candelabra.   6 volumes, 4to (290 x 212mm). Half titles, 308 engraved plates including a folding one representing the surroundings of Pompeii (lacking Advertisement to the readers in the first volume and the text leaves in every volume, indexes present only at the end of volume III, IV, V, VI, some small restored marginal tears not touching text and engravings, some foxing and sporadic waterstaining). Contemporary quarter-calf with gilt titles and decorations, percaline covers, speckled edges (light wear). Provenance: bookplate with winged lion on front endpaper of the first volume. (6)
