CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de (1547-1616) - Les principales avantures de l'admirable Don Quichotte. Aia: Pierre de Hondt, 1746.   A renowned Dutch edition of Cervantes' masterpiece illustrated by splendid engravings in first state without numbering. The plates, engraved by Jacob van der Schley (1715 -1779) and Bernard Picart (1673-1733), were mostly taken from the works of Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), whose extraordinary expressive drawings influenced the later depictions of Don Quixote. The texts reported are extracted from the original work and translated into French to explain the plates.   4to (292 x 220mm). Engraved vignette on title printed in red and black, engraved headpiece, woodcut headpieces and initials, 31 engraved plates (first two gatherings becoming loose, gatherings T and V detached, waterstain on the upper margin of the first plate and on the margin of the final leaves, browning, occasional foxing). Contemporary speckled calf, gilt decorations and title on spine, red edges, speckled endpapers (some wear, rubbing at joints, some small restorations on the back cover). Provenance: A.W.
