CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de (1547-1616). Tradotto da Charles JERVAS (ca. 1675-1739) - The Life and Exploits of the ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha. London: J. and R. Tonson and R. Dodsley, 1742 [con la vita di Cervantes datata al 1738].   First edition of the English translation by Charles Jervas of Cervantes' fundamental work. The work, published posthumously and engraved by Gerard van der Gucht after John Vandurban, known as the "Jarvis translation" due to a printer's error, "is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" (ODNB). This copy is complete with the "Supplement to the Translator's Preface", not found in all copies.   2 volumes, 4to (275 x 210mm). Engraved portrait of the author, initials and headpieces, woodcut tail pieces, 68 numbered engraved plates including frontispiece (frontispiece and penultimate plate with restored tear, some plates slightly cropped, light browning, some light staining and foxing). Quarter calf, covers in contemporary speckled paper, gilt titles and decorations on spine, marbled endpapers (light wear). "The Life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra written by Don Gregorio Mayans & Sicar" is printed with its own title dated 1738 and is in a different issue: the collation is A4 2a-l4 instead of A4 2a-l4 m2 but the text is all present.
