[GRAND TOUR - MANOSCRITTO] - DE BAILLON, Charles (1816-1889) - [Orient 1839]. 1839.   A splendid manuscript, enriched with delightful watercolours and maps, which narrates in the form of a diary the Grand Tour of Count Charles de Baillon. A renowned writer and translator, as well as a prominent figure in French nobility, the Count embarked on this lengthy journey at the age of 23 in the company of Prince de Léon Josselin de Rohan-Chabot, Viscount de Romano, Baron de Gary, and Léon Lafont, an "attaché" to the French legation in Florence. It was an extensive pilgrimage that took him to Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Israel-Palestine, Syria, Arabia (Sinai), and Egypt.   4to (243 x 165mm). Manuscript on paper elegantly written by single hand, consisting of 226 numbered leaves, 2 unnumbered, an index, 16 blank leaves, 5 original watercolours by the count, an engraved and watercoloured map; an aquatint plate; a double manuscript and watercoloured geographical map (some browning). Contemporary quarter calf signed "Petit succ.r de Simier", gilt titles and monogram on spine, decorated paper covers, marbled endpapers (some losses and restorations on spine).
