From ancient origins the Order was founded in 1748, thanks to King Frederick I of Sweden, together with other Swedish orders of chivalry. The order was intended, until 1975, as recognition for Swedish or foreign citizens ""emeritus for dedication to duty, for science, letters, teaching and utility for new works and charitable institutions""; it is currently awarded to members of the royal family and foreign nationals for acts of devotion and distinction towards Sweden."
