PINGONE, Filiberto (1525-1582) - Augusta Taurinorum. Torino: Nicolò Bevilaqua, 1577. [LEGATO DOPO, dello stesso autore:] - Inclytorum Saxoniae Sabaudiaeque principium arbor gentilitia. Torino: Nicolò Bevilaqua, 1581.   First edition of both works, among the most important dedicated to Turin and the Savoy dynasty. The chronicle of the city reported in "Augusta Turinorum" begins in 1529 BC to reach the contemporaneity of the author and is accompanied by a splendid map of Turin drawn by Giovanni Caracca (d. 1607) and engraved by Giovanni Criegher. The "Arbor gentiletia" starts from Sigerard, king of Saxony, outlining all the male and female descendants of the Saxon and Savoy princes up to the birth of Carlo Emanuele I in 1580. They are depicted in the large family tree at the end, while the portraits of the individual rulers had to be engraved inside the woodcut frames in the text. Only 4 were printed, the following: Beroldo, Umberto, Amedeo and Emanuele Filiberto. The author, State Councilor, Deputy Grand Referendary of Savoy and Rector of the Studio, supported the Saxon origins of the Savoys in this work.   2 works in one volume, folio (331 x 222mm). In the first work a woodcut device with the emblem of Turin in the center of title, a folding woodcut map, woodcut initials and illustrations, some pages printed in red and black; in the second work woodcut Savoy coat of arms on title, a very large woodcut folding genealogical plate at the end, woodcut initials, many woodcut frames with 4 woodcut portraits executed, gathering a2 is bound in the middle of gathering a4 (general foxing and light browning, in the first work tiny restoration on the external margin of the leaves, small wormtrack on the lower margin of two final two leaves, a few tiny marginal tears, in the genealogical plate of the second work occasional small wormtracks restored). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, within a modern cloth case (rebacked, light rubbing). Provenance: some contemporary underlining.
