[MANOSCRITTO - FACEZIE] - BARUFFALDI, Girolamo (1675-1755) - Delle sbottonate. Libro unico. [INSIEME A, dello stesso autore:] - Sonetti di Girolamo Baruffaldi sopra cinquanta massime di religiosa perfezione cavate dal libro delle Battaglie spirituali composto da Santa Catarina Vegri. 1714-1716.   A collection of autograph and partially unpublished compositions by Baruffaldi: the series of unpublished jokes is dated 18 January 1716, while the sonnets bear the year 1714. As can be read in the author's introduction, the intention of putting in writing the "sbottonate", i.e. jokes, was born during the evenings spent in the home of the doctor and dear friend Giuseppe Lanzoni (1665-1730), in the company of Marcantonio Freguglia and Carlo Franco Brasavola: "Le materie di questi domestici colloqui sono sempre state oneste, non meno che gioviali, e soprattutto ha giovato molto a mantenerle il ridire certe botte, o diciam noi sbottonate, che d'improvviso da begl'ingegni e da pronti spiriti si sogliono alle occasioni sputare, le quali oltre che esser piccanti, hanno insieme quel bizzarro e quel dilettevole che nasce dalla novità". In the same volume are also some sacred rhymes in honour of S. Caterina de' Vegri, later published in 1737 with the title "Le Vigrie". Baruffaldi was a leading figure of the 18th-century Ferrara, and the years from 1714 to 1729 were indeed the most lavish for him in recognition for his literary and ecclesiastical merits: he was elected canon of the cathedral and apostolic prothonotary, in 1724 he obtained the chair of eloquence in the Studio of Ferrara and in 1729 he was appointed archpriest of the parish church of Cento.   4to (188 x 145mm). 7 unnumbered leaves, 184 numbered pages of sbottonate, 58 leaves of sonetti, all autograph manuscript; woodcut device with the motto μηδενι ανατιθεμεν at titles. Contemporary boards, manuscript title on spine (rubbing, some gatherings detached and the others very loose). The lot also includes a manuscript letter by Baruffaldi with the sonnet LII.
