MENDO, Andres (1608-1685) - Il principe perfetto e ministri adattati documenti politici e morali corredati d'emblemi. Rome: Vincenzo Poggioli, 1816.   A finely bound copy of the first edition of the Italian translation, edited by Carlo Luigi di Borbone. The work "Principe Perfecto y Ministros Ajustados. Documentos politicos y morales. En Emblemas" is probably the best known of the Spanish Jesuit Andrés Mendo; it was written around 1660 in the wake of Machiavelli, to give precious advice to Prince Philip IV on good governance, politics and diplomacy.   4to (264 x 201mm). Engraved coat of arms on title, engraved plate with portraits of Charles II and Maria Luisa di Borbone Duchess of Lucca drawn by A. Tofanelli and engraved by Giovanni Folo, engraved headpieces at the beginning of each document by G. Mochetti (title with repair probably covering an earlier provenance, light foxing and browning). Contemporary mottled calf elaborately decorated in gilt on covers, spine and edges (minimal rubbing to extremities, light and small wormhole on spine).
