PERSIO Flacco, Aulo (34-62) - Aulus Flaccus Persius cum glosis Scipionis ferrarii Georgii filii de monteferrato artium & medicine doctoris. [Venice: Giacomo Penzio, dopo il 30 gennaio 1501].   A fascinating copy with numerous annotations in a fine contemporary binding in boards and blindstamped calf. It is the first edition of Scipione Ferrari's commentary on the well-known text by Persio and it is an uncommon edition of the works of the satirical poet Volterrano who lived in the first century AD and died prematurely. For a long time bibliographers believed that this was an edition printed at the end of the 15th century but more recent studies have identified the printer in Giacomo Penzio da Lecco and as a possible date of publication the year 1501.   4to (209 x 152mm). Woodcut initials (small hole restored on title causing the loss of a few letters on the verso, waterstaining to the first leaves, some light spotting). Contemporary half leather binding with blindstamped decorations, originally with clasps which are now missing, early manuscript vellum used in the binding, geometrical designs carved on covers (light rubbing). Provenance: contemporary annotations to endpapers and text - Faustus Costantius? (early ownership inscription on rear endpaper) - Franco Biancardi (stamp on front endpaper).   The lot is accompanied by an export certificate (DVAL) valid until 30 September 2022.
