Venice: Aldo Manuzio, 1502.   First Aldine edition of Statius, complete with the Ortography of the Greek terms, which in this edition is bound at the beginning of the volume: "Pour que ce volume soit complet, il faut en outre une partie separée de 40 feuillets, qui se trouve tanti au commencement, tanti a la fin". (Renouard, 35-7). The two colophons, the first one dated November 1502 and the second one dated August 1502, are regularly present, as is the famous Aldine anchor at the end of the Ortography, appeared for the first time in June of the same year for the "Poetae Christiani veteres".   2 parts in one volume, 8vo (160 x 95mm). Printer's device at the end of Ortopgraphy, first colophon at leaf G4r, second one at 2C4r (leaves in gathering F alternating with leaves from gathering G, gathering G repeated with a second G4r colophon, marginal waterstains especially at beginning and end). Later vellum, gilt title on spine label, blue edges (light staining). Provenance: S3? (early ownership inscription on title).
