CAYLUS, Anne-Claude-Philippe de (1692-1765) - Histoire de Joseph. Amsterdam: Jean Neaulme, 1757.   First and only edition of this children's book on the biblical story of Joseph, accompanied by fine drawings once attributed to Rembrandt and now considered the work of his most gifted pupil, Gebrand Van Eeckhout. In the author's intentions, the drawings are not only a support to the understanding of Joseph's edifying story, but also a means to allow young readers to develop their aesthetic sense.   Folio (325 x 197mm). Title in red and black with woodcut vignette, initials within decorated borders, woodcut head-and-tail pieces, 10 engraved plates (without final blank?, marginal tear not touching the engraving on the second plate, tiny hole in the lower margin of the final leaf, occasional soiling, some light staining and browning). Contemporary calf, title on label and gilt decorations on spine, red speckled edges, marbled endpapers (some scratches on covers and losses especially to spine and edges, waterstaining and slight losses on the rear endpaper). Provenance: M. A. Principis Burghesii (bookplate to the front endpaper) and "1818 Di. Francesco ?: Malvolti Romae" ownership inscription on final leaf).
