Naples: Tip. dell'Accademia Reale delle Scienze, 1881-1882.   An uncommon work of archaeological interest dedicated to the excavations of Stabia rediscovered in 1950 and excavated in the following years. This is part of the area known as Castellammare di Stabia whose excavation campaign began in 1749, during the reign of Charles of Bourbon through tunnels and which was then systematically resumed only in the second half of the 20th century. The work contains the excavation diaries, the plans, some letters and cartographies dating back to the explorations made at the end of the 18th century.   4to (314 x 235mm). Half-title, large topographical panorama of the Campagna in front of Castellammare and Gragnano engraved and folding and 19 double-page or folding plates with some parts in colour (minimal soiling). Red calf signed by the Neapolitan binder Luigi Sarracino elaborately decorated in gilt and blind, with fine blue silk endpapers, gilt spine and dentelles (front cover detached, joints damaged, extremities rubbed).
