MAFFEI, Scipione (1675-1755) - De gli anfiteatri e singolarmente del Veronese. Libri due. Verona: Giovanni Alberto Tumermani, 1728.   First and only edition in excellent condition, full of mostly folding engraved plates depicting the Colosseum, the Arena of Verona and the amphitheater of Pula. Mafffei, as explained in the title, intends to write about "what belongs to history, and what to architecture". Many of the plates are signed by the engraver Francesco Zucchi and the draftsman Saverio Avesani.   8vo (170 x 100mm). Printer's device on title, woodcut headpieces and initials, 15 engraved plates mostly folding, some engraved illustrations (small, light waterstain to the lower margin of the leaves in gathering G). Contemporary vellum, later manuscript title on spine, red speckled edges (very light rubbing). Provenance: "Alexandri Ballioni Oddi A.D. 1795" (ownership inscription on title).
