PETRINI, Giovanni Vincenzo (1725-1814) - Gabinetto mineralogico del Collegio Nazareno. Rome: Lazzarini, 1791-1792.   First edition of this extensive catalogue of the Collegeo Nazareno mineralogical museum in Rome, founded by the author father Giovan Vincenzo Petrini (1725-1784) and edited by Scipione Breislak, one of the founders of volcanology in Italy. The preliminary pages of the first volume provide some history of the collection and a synopsis of Lavoisier's new chemistry. The catalogue then begins classifying the samples in a standard structure of salts, earths, bitumen, flammable bodies and metals. The part about precious stones contains comments on their place of origin and the carat weights of the most important known diamonds.   2 volumes, 8vo (218 x 143mm). Title with woodcut decoration, woodcut initials and decorations, partially uncut (paper flaw touching text without compromising its legibility in z2, some water staining, foxing and browning). Contemporary decorated paper, speckled edges (heavy losses on spines and covers). Provenance: Conte Antonino Cumbo & figlio (stamp on front endpapers). (2)
