The French original, published in 1788, is considered one of the first historical novels and enjoyed great success.   12 volumes, 8vo (175 x 115mm). 31 engraved and handcoloured folding plates (in the fourth volume instead of S12 there is S8-T4, in the fifth instead of T12 there is T8-V4, in the eleventh instead of Y8 Z4 there is Y12, the text is complete; light browning, occasional light soiling, small wormtrack with some minor loss in the final gathering of the eleventh volume and wormtracks in the final plate, vol. VIII with stain at A1, some wax stains and a little burn to the plate). Original decorated paper with titles on spine, uncut (soiling, small chips and defects). (12)
