[ROMA] - CANINA, Luigi (1795-1856) - La prima parte della via Appia. Rome: G.A. Bertinelli, 1853.   An uncut copy of the first edition of the archaeological work of Canina, the result of his direction of the excavations in the section between the mausoleum of Ceciclia Metella and Bovillae, completed between 1850 and 1853. Canina studied architecture in Turin under the guidance of Ferdinando Bonsignore, then he moved to Rome in 1818; in those years he grew his passion for archeology, which led him to direct numerous excavations and to meet prominent personalities in the discipline, such as Antonio Nibby (1792-1839).   2 tomes in 2 volumes, folio and folio oblong (340 x 250mm text volume; 340 x 490mm atlas). Half-titles and 3 engraved plates, of which two folding, in the text volume which is collated as follows: 1- 34/4, 1-4/4; atlas volume with 50 engraved plates (spotting in both volumes, light waterstain at the first leaves and final gatherings of text volume, waterstain at the inner margin of the first 18 plates of the atlas). Later vellum signed Legatoria artistica R. Boccitto & C. Lombardi di Roma, gilt title on spine labels, uncut, volume of text unopend (light rubbing and very light wears) (2)
