Frankfurt: Mattheus Merian, 1640.   A fine copy in contemporary blindstamped pigskin of the first edition of this important and well-illustrated work on the topography of Italy with two splendid large-format bird's eye views of Venice and Rome.   Folio (320 x 205mm). Engraved frontispiece by Sandrart, title with engraved vignette, large engraved armorial coat of arms, 43 engraved plates including two splendid large format and folding bird's eye views of Venice and Rome, with errata at end (title with some small tears and stains, on guard and repaired at outer margin, browning and spotting throughout, light dampstaining, the view of Venice with the top margin uncut and chipped at corner, tiny wormtracks to lower margin of final leaves). Contemporary blindstamped pigskin, part of the original metal clasps, title on later paper label on spine, red edges (later endpapers, lightly rubbed, minor stains).
