[AMYOT, Jacques (1513-1593)] - PLUTARCO (47 d.C. - 120 d.C. ca) - Les Vies des hommes illustres. Paris: Michel de Vascosan, 1565.   Second revised and corrected edition of Amyot's renowned translation, published for the first time in 1559 by Michel de Vascosan himself. The work was enormously successful and had great influence on entire generations of writers, so much so that Montaigne stated "nous autres ignorants étions perdus, si ce livre ne nous eût relevés du bourbier" (Essais, II-4).   Folio (341 x 205mm). Woodcut initials and headpieces (small tear without text loss at 2E3, occasional staining and foxing, light browning). Later calf, title on label and gilt decorations on spine, red edges, marbled endpapers (front cover and lower edge of spine detached, front endpaper partially detached, some losses and wear). Provenance: Solandigne? (ownership inscription partially deleted on title).
