London: Thomas Sawbridge, 1686.   A copy enriched by elegant contemporary annotations in the margins of both the text and the plates and complete of the 123 engraved plates including the 7 smaller ones. This is the first complete collection of Malpighi's writings which concern the scientist's investigations into the microscopic structures of plant and animal anatomy and which have produced innovative contributions in the fields of embryology, histology and physiology. This is the edition printed by Thomas Sawbridge while there is also an edition printed by Robert Scott from the same year. Garrison-Morton-Norman 66.   2 parts in one volume, folio (367 x 235mm). Title printed in red and black in the first part, engraved frontispiece, 123 engraved plates numbered in each part, 7 of which of smaller in size and not numbered bound in the final part (first part with a tear repaired at P2 and without first blank; second part lacking red and black frontispiece and section title to Anatomes Plantarum, some browning and spotting). Contemporary speckled calf, spine decorated in gilt with title on red label (joints cracked, rebacked preserving part of the original spine, modern guards, extremities restored and rubbed). Compared to the copy digitized in BHL the second part De Bombyce is bound before De Seminum and some plates are bound in a different order. Provenance: contemporary annotations.
