DONI, Antonio Francesco (1513-1575) - La Zucca del Doni. Venice: Francesco Marcolini, 1551.   First edition, extensively illustrated, of Doni's work, containing the Cicalamenti, the Baie, the Chiachiere. "An authentic monument of words, the Zucca collects letters, short stories, "dicerie", speeches, "facezie", descriptions, mostly published elsewhere, oscillating between causality and the needs of the press, and therefore without a precise compositional structure, and a more personal urgency of D. to "say himself", to consume himself in writing" (G. Romei).   3 parts in one volume, 8vo (155 x 103mm). Woodcut general title, three other titles with woodcut vignettes before each part, many woodcut illustrations, some full-page including the portrait of Doni and vignettes depicting Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio (title lightly cropped, little tear at Y1, tiny wormtrack to final three leaves not touching text, browning, occasional foxing). Modern burgundy calf with green fillets on plates, green title on spine (few scratches to back cover).
