[BINDING] - OVIDIO (43 a.C.-17? d.C.) - Epistolae; Amorum libri III; De arte amandi libri II; De remedio amoris libri II. Antwerp: ex officina Christopher Plantin, 1583.   A copy in fine 16th century binding, probably of Scottish origins. McKerrow in "An Introduction to Bibliography" (1927, p. 123) describes another example of a binding with the motto "Love keepeth" found in a book printed in Paris in 1515 and preserved in the University Library [of Cambridge] (Rel. e. 58. 1 and 2). It is the same motto used by Richard Jugge in London (1547-77) and by Alexander Arbuthnot in Edinburgh (1576-85) (McKerrow, "Devices", Nos. 123, 125, 225, 228 and G.D. Hobson in "Bindings in Cambridge Libraries", 1929, p. 106, n.1). Since this book was printed after Jugge's period of activity, it is logical to think that the engraving with the motto was taken by Arbuthnot and is therefore Scottish.   12mo (119 x 75mm). Title within woodcut frame, woodcut initials (without final blank, browning, some small tears and occasional stains). Contemporary calf of English or Scottish origins with a gilt device on covers within an oval with the motto "Love kepeth the lawe obeieth the king and is good to the comen'lte" (rubbing to extremities and joints). Provenance: contemporary underlining and framing of the text, some annotations.
