PETRARCA, Francesco (1304-1374) - Il Petrarca con l'espositione di M. Alessandro Vellutello. Venice: Giovanni Antonio Bertano, 1584.   A copy of Petrarch's work edited by Alessandro Vellutello. Published for the first time in 1525, it was a real editorial success with around twenty reprints in the sixteenth century. In particular, the merit of Vellutello consists in the tripartite division of the Canzoniere between rhymes in Laura's life and death and rhymes of political or moral topics.   4to (202 x 140mm). Title within an elaborate woodcut border, woodcut initials and illustrations for each of the six Triumphs (M3 with tiny loss to lower margin not touching text, some waterstaining, foxing and browning sometimes heavier). Modern vellum, gilt decorations on spine, red upper edge, marbled endpapers (light wear, some foxing to edges).
