CIERMANS, Ioannes (1602-1648) - Disciplinae mathematicae traditae anno institutae societatis Iesu seculari. Louvain: Everaerdt De Witte, 1640 [al colophon].   A rare edition of the important work by Joannes Ciermans. Active mainly in Portugal, where he carried out significant works in military engineering, the Jesuit, originally from the Netherlands, taught mathematics at the University of Louvain from 1637 to 1641. In this educational context, his "Disciplinae mathematicae" was born, in which a subject is assigned to each month: geometry, arithmetic, optics, statics, hydrostatics, nautics, architecture, logic, war machines, geography, astronomy, and chronology. The work is accompanied by 35 delightful engraved headpieces by Neeffs based on the drawings of Fruitiers depicting cherubs engaged in various disciplines.   4to (290 x 180mm). Elaborate engraved frontispiece dated 1641, allegorical engraved title, woodcut initials, and delightful headpieces at the beginning of each chapter (frontispiece slightly cropped at upper margin, reinforcements and marginal restorations to final three leaves, some wormtracks to inner margin of a few leaves, some light staining). Contemporary vellum, speckled edges (front joint splitting, some stains and light wear). It was not possible to find a collation and the work is without a clear signature. Our copy corresponds to the digital reproduction from the Complutense University Library in Madrid. Provenance: bookplate at front endpaper.
