Venice: Giordano Ziletti, 1577.   First part of the first Italian translation of the fascinating work by Lopes de Castanheda, a Portuguese historian who spent ten years in India and the Moluccas. There he collected the material necessary for this historical work, published for the first time in Coimbra in 1551 and dedicated to the great Portuguese explorations and conquests promoted by King Manuel I.   Only first part (of two), 4to (210 x 155mm). Printer's device on title and colophon, woodcut headpieces and initials (without blanks π2, 3, first leaf loose, wormtracks on title and on first gathering touching the text and marginal wormtracks on the final leaf, light browning, occasional foxing and minimal marginal paper flaws, some light soiling, gatherings a-d4 bound at the end). Contemporary vellum (rubbing and chipping especially on spine, lacking laces, wormtracks at endpapers).
